The Empire
The Alvirenne Empire is huge; having conquered, absorbed through marriage, and accepted petitions of obeisance from many countries. It encompasses fertile heartlands, broad plains, windy norther steppes, and tropical jungles. It is rules by Queen Gwendylar and her collection of consort princes and princesses, served by a court bound by elaborate and baroque rituals.
The Empire has reached the limits of convenient expansion, so it has turned its attention over the seas. A fleet delivered an army to an unknown land in the distant east and has already taken new land, island in the west have been colonized. Scouts have discovered a vast and unexplored land to the west and the Empire has sent an envoy to the Florend Islands, not far offshore from that unknown land, to judge what would best serve the interests of the Empire.
In the meanwhile exiles are sent there, people too useful to execute or condemn to a life of hard labour, in order to build up a population that can be exploited at a later date.
What you know of the western lands, some of which may be wrong
The Florend Islands, also called the Florend Archipelago, lay a few hundred miles from the shores of Shunali, as that unexplored land is called. According to legend the land extended out to the east at one time and was ruled by a cruel despot; supposedly the land was drowned in a cataclysm and all that remains are the scattered islands now called the Florends and the broken cliffs to the west that act as a bastion against any who try to explore further inland.
North and south
To the north along the coast is the icy land of Havakti, known for the fierce tribes that make their home there as hunters and fishermen. It is said they ride in ice chariots and hunt the fearsome giant ice worms.
To the south along the coast is the Kole Empire, a decadent and decaying culture apparently given to the worship of animal spirits and the foul god H’na vo Thoyen. The members of the nobility and the military wear animal masks and never take them off unless they are alone.
