The Galactic Empire
The Old Empire ruled the galaxy for 10000 years or more according to legends. Its technology was more advanced than anything developed in the modern era. This almost mythical period of history was marked by wide spread peace and prosperity, with the Science Police enforcing the law and protecting the weak and defenseless.
Enemies beyond the edge of the galaxy plotted and schemed and finally attacked the Old Empire, inciting revolt among the ambitious sector governors and spreading corruption among the citizens. War consumed the Old Empire.
The Era of Wars lasted perhaps 1000 years, no one is certain of the exact amount of time. Whole planets were burned off and left lifeless, stars were detonated and entire systems wiped out. Eventually so much had been lost in terms of culture and technology that a dark age descended on the galaxy, but still the wars went on.
The Era of Wars ended with the formation of the New Galactic Empire 617 years ago by the first empress Istalla Vennix after her alliance had defeated all other factions; ushering in a period of relative peace, prosperity, and eventual stagnation. In the modern era the Empire is overextended and struggles under a petrifying level of bureaucracy.
The Emperor or Empress is elected by the Electors of H'sai, a council of nobles and corporate magnates. The current ruler of the Empire is Emperor Ultarin Bael.
Imperial culture has become baroque and decadent. Prejudice against non-humans, or bemmies, is on the rise. Aliens are generally second class citizens at best. Belare are not allowed in Imperial service.
The first line of defense for the Empire is the Navy, but there is another force protecting Imperial interests, the Space Patrol. The Patrol is a tasked with Exploration, Search and Rescue, and Law Enforcement in the remote parts at the edge of Imperial space or beyond. They also act as a reserve for the Navy.
As it is too expensive to station Imperial forces in all the colonial star systems each planet at the edge has a Colonial Military Reserve (the CMR), essentially a militia formed around a cadre of retired ground forces personnel. Privateers form an ad-hoc and irregular colonial naval force.
Navy and Patrol ranks:
Crew 3rd class, crew 2nd class, crew 1st class, petty officer, po 1st class, chief po, master chief po
Ensign, lieutenant, commander, captain, commodore, rear admiral, admiral
Ground forces ranks:
private, lance corporal, corporal, sergeant, staff sgt, gunnery sgt, master sgt
cornet, lieutenant, captain, major, colonel, brigadier general, general
Organisations and Agencies of Note
The Ravens are the Imperial secret police, tasked with ferreting out internal enemies as well as gathering information about external enemies and dealing with them directly or handing the information over to the military for resolution.
The Order of the Silver Tower is a mystical order of Adepts that is dedicated to the defense of the Empire. Members serve at court, including one who holds the office of Imperial Truth Seeker. May Adepts are partnered with Sentinels who serve the order as their fighting arm.
The Stormcallers are a group of Melders that act as psychic support for the Imperial military, providing downrange damage on time and on target.

A few of the major players are:
• Angels Wing (health care, disaster response, search and rescue, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies)
• Paladin Security (security consulting and personnel, weapons research, munitions, law enforcement)
• Pyramid Corp. (scientific R&D, weapons research, hyperdrive research, multimedia outlet, fashion)
• Red Sun Salvage (exploration, starship technology, recycling, mining, cargo transport)
• The Rook Group (security consulting and personnel, law enforcement, weapons manufacturing)
• The Venture Company (heavy industry, mining, cargo transport, chemical research)
• Umbrella Corp (medical technology, pharmaceuticals, biological research)
• The Fnord Foundation (space technology research, starship and vehicle construction, cosmetics)
• Spacer’s Choice (agriculture, food processing and distribution, recreational beverages) Slogan: Spacer’s choice, it’s not the best choice, it’s the only choice!
Forerunners
An ancient alien race known only from their massive monuments, puzzling constructions, and very advanced technology. The Forerunners preceded the Old Galactic Empire by an estimated one million years. Nothing is known about their biology or culture.
Ordell: a sun with 4 planets set at 4 equidistant points along the same orbit with an asteroid belt beyond that orbit. Each planet features one biome with appropriate life forms; desert, ocean, forest, and arctic. It is believed that the entire system is a Forerunner monument.
One example of Forerunner technology is the force field bracelet, which generates a self-renewing protective field. The Emperor owns one of these incredibly rare items (12 temporary HP, regenerate d6/round).
