If you unroll a map of the world and look to the East you will see a continent labelled Nasharin that features broad mountain ranges, deep forests, open grasslands, frozen wastelands, and more of what one might expect to find on a large land mass. A closer look will see the borders of many kingdoms marked on the map, and one area noted as the Empire of Ellethmyr, encompassing four kingdoms: Talair, Lannon, Golnire, and Hathric.
Closely allied with the Empire are Angslin, the mountainous Dwarf homeland, and Lynnwyr, the forest kingdom of the Fey.
For centuries the Empire has stood as a beacon of Light and the foe to Evil and offers a benevolent and compassionate rule of law. Once the Empire was locked into centuries of conflict with the land of Sariloth but 87 years ago the Grand Army of the Empire defeated Sariloth and killed the Sorcerer Kings. Since then only petty Evils have threatened the peace if one avoids the topic of the Ice Queen Anthea and her citadel in the frozen North.
The Empire was born during war. Adir Shadowclaw, a necromancer and demonologist, had defeated and united a collection of petty kingdoms and tribal nomads to create Sariloth, domain of the Sorcerer King. Adir ruled a kingdom of slaves that worked to make the kingdom an engine of war. He allayed the suspicions of the other countries with cool and measured diplomacy until he was ready to unleash his army of men, the dead, and fell creatures on the land of Nasharin. At first Adir was very successful. His army smashed the defenders aside in battle after battle.
The Angel Savramire rallied the broken remnants of the armies of men, elves, and dwarves and lead them to a hidden valley where he trained and forged them into the Sun Legion. Over the next few years the world was torn by battle and countless numbers died on both sides and the land was reduced to a desolation. To unify the army he brought together King Thierry of Talair and Queen Megan of Lannon, their marriage merged those kingdoms and created the Ellethmyr Empire (and began the Imperial Calendar at year 1). Thierry and Megan built a new city on an island to be the Imperial capital. It was given the name Ellethmyr by Savramire, a word that means 'strength through harmony' in the Old Tongue.
Eventually they drove the forces of Sariloth back and reclaimed their homes. An exhausted, uneasy peace descended on the world, broken regularly over the centuries by conflicts large and small. In the year 560 the last Sorcerer King was finally thrown down and the fell army of Sariloth was defeated, the inhabitants dispersed and driven south for an exile of 20 years, after which they were allowed return and build a life in their old country. Sariloth itself is held by the Imperial Crown and is under the control of the occupying garrison.
The current year is 647, the current Empress is Allisette Daraine the Fifth.
