The Arienna Protectorate
This Imperial possession is a large collection of islands located three months sailing to the West that was discovered about 140 years ago and colonised about 100 years ago. It was named for the Empress who ruled at that time, Arienne III. The Protectorate islands have a temperate climate with fertile farmlands that produce a heavy crop each year. There are several mines producing the rare substance Earthblood, chunks of green crystal that are valued for use in alchemical and arcane processes, as well as more mundane mines that produce iron and copper and silver.
The Protectorate is ruled by a Viceroy, assisted by a Captain-General that sees to military matters and a Governor who manages civil affairs. The Imperial Navy maintains a small squadron of ships that answers to the Imperial Throne and the Naval Office and that may or may not cooperate with the Viceroy depending on the circumstances.
While a valuable source of Earthblood, this remote colony is perpetually understaffed and underfunded. With no known significant threats to the interests of the Protectorate the Imperial forces are at an often impractical minimum. Creativity and improvisation are the key to successful Imperial service here.
The colony is confined to the Eastern group of the islands. Although the full group of islands have been circumnavigated most of them largely unexplored, in part due to rumoured strange and dangerous creatures that might be found. It is said that a large lake is at the centre of the large central island called Tarilith and that a city can be seen under the water, but this has never been confirmed.
There are two cities, in the North is New Trannic and in the south is Fort Repose. Smaller towns and villages can be found along the coast or inland along the main road. The colony is divided into counties, each based around a town or city. One such town is Twilight Glen of Marisal County, located about 100 miles from Fort Repose.
Ruins have been found of some past culture but no humans were living on the island when it was discovered as far as anyone knows. Inscriptions have been translated that speak of the Lost Kings and their powerful kingdoms that ruled the cluster of islands but nothing of them remains today except ruins scattered about the land. The ruins are in general avoided and none have been resettled although some of the cut stone blocks are missing and perhaps may have been stolen to use elsewhere.
The most common dangers are believed to be the orc pirates and the large hungry beasts of the wild.
