After some experimentation it seems that these items user powers that are not totally unlike the Force and Master Brill wants the team to study and use these items to learn more about them.
Necklace from goblin shaman: polished garnets on a cord/ +2 save vs poison
Ring from cursed magi: beaten copper/ +2 save and -/10 DR vs elemental attacks
Bracer from box: plain silver band/ +4 initiative
Crystal rod from box: 30cm long/ projects a burst of cold (d20 elemental damage and half move for 2 melee rounds, Fort DC 15 (half damage and no move loss, range 30m, use 2 per day)
