Incident Reports for 6/13/18, 7/11/18, and 7/25/18:
Shortly after returning to Magradore Station from the notorious pirate base known as the Pipe, while Allora was off tirelessly giving yet more interviews about her part in the amazing rescue mission that the party had conducted against the Red Vole Gang, Gar, Thrax, and Daedalus enjoyed a drink in the lounge of one of the station’s nightclubs when they were rudely interrupted by a bunch of murderous goblins whom they discovered were hiding in a covered cart. Some, but not all hell broke loose as the three adventurers jumped into action. Daedalus breathed fire on the cart, killing several of the goblins within, while Gar delivered a non-lethal shot to the goblin wheelman. More goblins emerged from the side door and joined the fray while Gar and Thrax maneuvered through the chaos of club kids no longer enjoying the music as the fire sprinklers rained down on them, in order to face a more challenging threat: a Morg with a rather large machine gun and a grumpy disposition. The Morg did them a favor by taking out several of the gobs who stood in its way, while Daedalus convinced the remaining ones that discretion was the better part of valor. The Morg developed a case of the butterfingers after Daedalus magically greased his gun, forcing the space cow to draw its sword as Thrax gleefully engaged it in hand-to-hand combat. Thrax’s snarling fangblade and Gar’s tricksy pew-pews eventually brought the Morg down.
Victory was short-lived, however, as a station security bot arrived on the scene and ordered them to halt. Hailing Corbin to spool up the engines for a quick getaway, the three vamoosed with the unconscious gob wheelman. Upon interrogation aboard the ship, they learned that his name was Brix, that the Red Vole Gang had put a hit out on the party, and that he and his poor comrades were only trying to make a buck. Assumedly, that was also the Morg’s motivation. Rather than space the terrified Brix, as a scientific experiment, Daedalus decided to try and rehabilitate the little fella, who for his part refrained from shanking the crew in their sleep.
The party decided to leave the station and the system behind for the time being and flew off to investigate the mysterious coordinates that they’d discovered on the body of a woman named Jessala Maridell, an employee of the Astina Company, an entrepreneurial research firm from the core worlds of the Empire, and most recently a hostage of the Red Vole Gang who was unfortunately killed by a sniper during the rescue mission on the Pipe. The coordinates lead them to the Suadith System where they discovered an ancient, gigantic ringed structure unlike anything they’d seen before (demiurge.proboards.com/thread/142/sun-ring). A scan of the system’s planets and moons showed them to be completely devoid of life, so they turned their attention to the ring itself. The ring orbited a yellow sun at very close range and was of unknown origin. It appeared to have a single airlock, so after gearing up to face the unknown, the party crossed over and boarded what they dubbed the “Sun Ring.”
As they did, some sort of interference caused communications with the Stobor to cut in and out. There was no welcome party to greet them. There were, however, several cleaning bots of different shapes and sizes which largely ignored them as they single-mindedly went about their business of keeping the Ring relatively tidy (despite the presence and the assumedly strong work ethic of the bots, the first few rooms they discovered contained more debris and garbage than expected. Perhaps there had been a strike).
As the party pressed on, Daedalus became aware of a psychic presence following their progress and informed the others of this. They soon arrived at a room with environmental controls, which they decided to leave alone, not knowing what beasties might emerge from hiding if they turned out all the lights. They soon discovered that there were some beasties aboard that apparently didn’t care about the health effects of fluorescent lighting (this is conjecture). A pair of women who would have fit right in in any galactic nightclub approached the party and requested help. This was a ruse to lower our heroes’ guard, however, as the women quickly revealed themselves to be none other than Quarren (ie, Illithid; ie, Mindflayers)! The squidheads brought backup in the form of two drones armed with laser rifles. Fortunately, the drones were not a significant threat since they couldn’t hit the broad side of a space barn, and were quickly put down along with the Quarren. A search of the bodies of the Quarren produced two ID cards for the women they were masquerading as, who just happened to be from Magradore Station. Strange worms were found inside the drones’ ears, which were assumed to have been used by the Quarren to maintain control over the drones and keep them compliant. Daedalus took the worms for later study.
Also found on the Quarren was a crystal holographic display with a friendly personality matrix named Tarby Malina, an archaeologist who had traveled to and died on the Ring several hundred years before, when his team fiddled too much with the environmental controls, triggering the Ring’s internal defenses, which took the form of an apparently deadly four-limbed creature. Tarby related all he knew about the Ring, which he called a “Sun Cannon,” but unfortunately since his expedition was cut short, he was unable to say what lay deeper within it.
The party was disturbed by a low humming and a vibration all around them, as if the Ring were preparing to do Something Big. Moments later, aboard the Stobor, Corbin, Orrin, and Brix witnessed the Sun Cannon in action as it absorbed a tremendous amount of energy from the sun, which then disappeared through a wormhole that the Ring simultaneously opened. Exactly where the enormous killer solar flare went is anyone’s guess.
Leaving Allora and Emmett behind to guard their retreat, Gar, Thrax, and Daedalus proceeded onward, taking Tarby with them. They were soon met by a mysterious figure that turned out to be another artificial personality in the form of an alien hologram. Calling itself “Hassire,” they told the party about the history of the Ring and the tragedy of its creators (demiurge.proboards.com/thread/143/hajmilir). Hassire explained that over the eons, many others had discovered the Ring, each attempting to use it for their own evil purposes. The Quarren were the most recent ones to seek its power, and Magradore Station was the Ring’s next target. Hassire asked their help to put an end to the threat that the Ring posed to the galaxy and beyond. There was no way to disable the Ring’s systems, but Hassire was aware of another person on board who could turn the Ring’s power against itself. However, they first had to be freed from the Quarren’s control. The three agreed to do what they could to help, and were given medallions that provided life support should things go sideways. There was little else Hassire could do to assist them.
From there, the three advanced through the corridors to a conference room. As they crossed to the opposite door, they were attacked by a foul blob of gibbering mouths that fell from the ceiling and onto the table in the center of the room. Gar shot it up while Thrax sliced and diced it until it was dead. They soon learned that they were also being stalked by a disfigured or mutated humanoid with a large gun. Closing the door behind them in an effort to slow down their pursuer and provide themselves with temporary cover, they continued down another hallway beyond which lay the Ring’s main control room. Thrax entered the room first and was attacked by a Quarren, which proceeded to strangle him with its mind. However, this proved to be but a temporary setback. With their usual combination of grit, skill, and luck, the three quickly exterminated the villains.
All that was left to do then was to free the Quarren’s captive, a humanoid male who was attached to a giant brain with disgusting tentacles that were burrowed deep into his skin. In obvious agony, he begged the three for help. They obliged by killing the giant brain, freeing him. He then bid them to get as far from the Ring as possible while he forced it to blow itself to hell. The three raced back to Allora and Emmett, where they quickly gathered up the heads of the dead Quarren (which Thrax had previously removed at Daedalus’ request) along with one of the dinner-plate shaped cleaning bots, and asked Corbin to make them an exit. He did. Fortunately they remembered their life-support medallions that Hassire had given them, which protected them as they were sucked out into the vacuum of space and scooped up by Corbin. Once safely aboard the ship, they put the pedal to the metal to get clear of the Ring when it went BOOM. Which it did in spectacular fashion.
Arriving back at Magradore Station after a month of traveling through the Drift, and wishing to avoid any public attention (aware as they were that there was a price on their heads and that they might still also be wanted by station security for their involvement in the Nightclub Incident), Ziggy provided them with a clandestine docking bay where they could board the station without anyone knowing. Weary from their adventure, the heroes returned to their apartments without further incident.
